Why Organic Tampons?

Crimson Organic Tampons

Love Your Body – What You Put Into It Matters

Many of us are completely unaware of the danger posed by conventional tampons. Your vaginal vault is one of the most absorbent parts of your body. So introduced chemicals, pesticides, fragrances, synthetics and plastic from sprayed non-organic cotton crops are involuntarily absorbed by your body.

At Crimson Organic we believe women should not have to expose themselves to harmful chemicals and toxins in order to manage their monthly flow. Crimson tampons contain only ONE material; 100% certified pure organic cotton. Nothing else.

Conventional tampons are typically made from cellulose, rayon, viscose and other synthetic fibres derived from wood pulp (sawdust). When they are bleached, a by-product called dioxin can be released. Regular exposure to dioxin is not only carcinogenic (causes cancer) but is also linked to endometriosis and endocrine disruption. This is one of the reasons that endometriosis support groups recommend using organic cotton products…like Crimson.

Synthetics are cheaper to produce than cotton. However, they have been repeatedly associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). This is a rare but potentially deadly illness caused by bacteria and linked to the use of tampons.

The world’s leading expert on TSS is Dr Philip Tierno, a professor at New York University Medical School.  The professor has spent 40 years conducting independent research into TSS and its link to tampons. His research shows tampon composition and the length of time it is left in the body are both major contributing factors to TSS.

Dr Tierno believes that the safest tampon is a 100% cotton tampon. Which is exactly what we supply at Crimson Organic.

In an interview with The Guardian he said: "the bottom line is that you can get TSS with synthetic tampons but not with an all-cotton tampon”. In a recent podcast interview he discussed the dangers of using tampons that contain synthetic ingredients.  He also warns against using tampons made from conventionally grown cotton because they contain residues of pesticides such as glyphosphate (found in Round-Up weedkiller) that are subsequently absorbed by the body.

Like Dr Tierno, we at Crimson believe corners should not be cut when it comes to women’s wellbeing. Synthetics may be cheaper to produce but we value your health more.

Love Your Earth – Environ-menstrual Facts

Small Things Can Have Big Effects. Conventional branded menstrual products nearly all contain plastic. A woman uses an average of over 11,000 disposable menstrual products in her reproductive lifetime. That’s enough plastic to fill the average sized car. It ends up in landfill or, even worse, in seas and rivers causing harm to marine life. Some of this plastic can take up to a lifetime to biodegrade. Crimson tampons contain NO PLASTIC. They are compostable and biodegrade in 3-5 years.

Regular cotton is one of the most sprayed crops in the world. The pesticides and insecticides applied contaminates the waterways and the soil. This can destroy the eco-systems and puts both the animals and our health at risk. By using only 100% organic cotton like we do at Crimson, we eliminate this risk of harm to our planet and speed up the rate of biodegradability. Additionally, by supporting organic farming you do not expose cotton workers to the risk of potentially lethal pesticide poisoning.
